While students at New York City's Charles Evans Hughes High School in the mid-1950s, lead Alton Campbell, bass Alvin Williams, first tenor Billy Montgomery, second tenor Cliff Williams, and baritone Bobby Thomas, developed their smooth harmonizing Doo-Wop sound, mixed with zany humour, with inspiration from established groups such as The Cleftones, Harptones, Heartbeats and Coasters.
Most of their material was written by Alvin, and that included Rang Tang Ding Dong (I'm The Japanese Sandman), which was brought to the attention of Apollo Records in New York, a label which had been around since 1944 recording R&B artists like Champion Jack Dupree, The Larks and The "5" Royales.
